Color Mixing Workbook for Oils
Published in Hardcover by Artways (01 February, 1998)
Author: Michael Wilcox
Average review score:

Wilcox a proven resource
In 1980 Michael Wilcox published a workbook in which the buyer painted color samples in order to understand how to effectively mix oils. I have continued to use this book for 20 years! With over 250 examples I have come to know my own palette and to understand how to mix oils. The book has been with me in my studio and when I'm out "in the field." I have purchased other books over the years that have appeared to be helpful, or entertaining, but have not remained useful. I'm grateful he's continued to publish and I highly recommend any and every book he has written. His knowledge is substantial and has proven to be reliable.

Daughters of God Scriptural Portraits: Scriptural Portraits
Published in Hardcover by Deseret Books (April, 1998)
Authors: S. Michael Wilcox and Michael S. Wilcox
Average review score:

Educational and Insipiring!
Daughters of God is a treasure! Michael Wicox's examination of the lives of the women of the scriptures is a work of depth and meaning. I gained not only a greater knowledge and understanding of the lives of these women, but insight into my own influence and responsibilities as a woman and a daughter of God. Mr. Wicox examines the actions and ensuing consequences of the women of the scriptures individually, from the famous Jezebel and Eve to the little known Penninnah and little maid of Naaman; sharing his own thoughtful and inspiring insights on how the lessons of their lives may be applied to our own. I have so enjoyed and been so uplifted by this book that when, after having read only half of it and being unable to recover it after having left it where I was vacationing, I bought it a second time! Not at the discounted Amazon.com price, but full cover price at a local book store. And I was so grateful to have found it that I did not mind!

Discovering Hebrews and 1&2 Peter: A Bible Study for Youth
Published in Paperback by Beacon Hill Press (May, 1996)
Author: Jim Wilcox
Average review score:

This book was so helpful for my youth group.
I've been looking for a book or series like this forever, it seems. So few Bible study books have a sense of humor along with a sense of God's spirit. This combines first-rate exposition with practical exercises and genuine wit. I can't wait for the next ones on Matthew, and Romans/James. Keep up the great work, Wilcox!

Down home, Camden, Alabama
Published in Unknown Binding by McGraw-Hill ()

Down Home
I read this book yesterday. It was awesome. It presents all the sides of an issue--life in Camden, Alabama in general, racism and segregation specificly--from the direct words of the people there. Accompanied with beautiful photographs of the people which make you want to read what they say. (Even if the people are ugly, the photographs are beautiful.) And I really came away from this book understanding the civil rights movement, slavery, racism in 1970, segregation, and racism today a lot better.

Emily Donelson of Tennessee
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Tennessee Pr (October, 2001)
Authors: Pauline Wilcox Burke and Jonathan M. Atkins
Average review score:

I am in love.
This is the most beautiful book that has ever been written. I cried as I read it. My tears over it's beauty and poetry could fill the ocean (probably the Indian Ocean, because the Atlantic might be too big of a stretch.) I foresee a Nobel Prize for literature in its future. Even the cover of this book makes me tremble with delight. The buxom beauty is drawn with such classical perfection that I sigh with pleasure as i look upon her lily-white breast. Her story is told with such passion, such fervor, my palms filled with sweat merely holding this sacred book. I plead with all the world to read this novel! Oh, beauty, thy name is Emily Donelson

Heads Up on the New Commodity Markets
This book is the first that I have seen tackling the newer commodity markets of weather, emissions, bandwidth and coal trading. It is easy to read and quite informative. Peter Fusaro has assembled the leading practioners from the global energy trading community to offer their insights into these emerging markets. Moreover, software solutions, European gas trading, electronic energy trading and iondex construction are explained simply and clearly for the laymen. It's a must buy if you want to get up to speed fast in these rapidly changing markets which are now more important than ever due to the Enron financial meltdown.

The Fathers of the Church: Saint Augustine: Treatises on Marriage and Other Subjects
Published in Hardcover by Catholic Univ of Amer Pr (December, 1955)
Authors: St. Augustine, Charles T. Wilcox, and Saint Augustine
Average review score:

Some Short, but Important Works
This is a collection of nine short works by Augustine. The table of contents is presented below:

"The Good of Marriage", introduced and translated by Charles T. Wilcox

"Adulterous Marriages", introduced and translated by Charles T. Huegelmeyer

"Holy Virginity", introduced and translated by John McQuade

"Faith and Works", introduced and translated by Marie Liguori

"The Creed", introduced and translated by Marie Liguori

"Faith and the Creed", introduced and translated by Robert P. Russell

"The Care to be Taken for the Dead", introduced and translated by John A. Lacy

"In Answer to the Jews", introduced and translated by Marie Liguori

"The Divination of Demons", introduced and translated by Ruth Wentworth Brown

"The Good of Marriage" was one of Augustine's most influential works. He wrote it to define the purpose of marriage and to defend it as a good - not as good as holy virginity but a good nevertheless. To this end, he defined the purpose of marriage (what goods it brings to those in the married state), and from this what the duties of marriage must therefore be. It is a work at once strange and familiar. It is strange in the pains it takes to defend the idea that marriage is not actually sinful (a charge that few would even think to make today). It is familiar in that many of the most criticized aspects of the Catholic view of marriage, such as the denial of divorce and the sinfulness of non-procreative sex, are presented and defended in this work. It is a powerful presentation of these embattled points of doctrine and well worth reading.

"Adulterous Marriages" is a treatment of a variety of possible issues and complications surrounding adultery, particularly with regard to separation and remarriage. It was built on the same theological foundations as "The Good of Marriage", but was aimed less at expounding doctrine than answering possible objections to it and clarifying the finer points. It almost serves as a set of appendices to that prior and more foundational work.

"Holy Virginity" is a work that necessarily followed Augustine's works on marriage. Having defended the goodness of marriage, a defense of the superior goodness of virginity was required. The argument is rhetorical in form and scriptural in content. The main purpose is completed fairly quickly - Augustine draws on the lives of Mary, Jesus, the Apostles, and the teachings of Paul to establish that holy virginity is a good thing. Surprisingly, he then devotes considerable space to warning those practicing virginity not to be over-proud of their state and its superiority over marriage and to caution those practicing virginity to humility.

"Faith and Works" concerns what the title suggests it concerns. The launching point, however, is the narrower question of whether pagan converts should be educated in the requirements of a Christian life before or after baptism. This question leads Augustine into the question of how important the Christian life is to salvation: do works matter? Augustine's answer and the scripture used in addressing this point is the Catholic position. It relies on Peter, John, James, and Jude as counterweights to the "faith alone" reading of Paul, and in fascinating in showing how the question did not arise suddenly in the sixteenth century but in fact had very old roots (Augustine in fact regards it as old even in his own time, and as having been settled in the time of the Apostles).

"The Creed" is a short work, originally given as a sermon, explaining the meaning of the Creed to a lay audience. Augustine went slowly through the Creed, explaining each line's meaning in clear terms, and avoiding theological heavy lifting.

"Faith and the Creed" is a slightly longer work than its predecessor, and was aimed at a more sophisticated audience. It also works slowly through the Creed, but its main occupation is using it as a means of differentiating Catholic from Manichaean belief, naturally to the credit of the former.

"The Care to be Taken for the Dead" is a sensitive work for those dealing with the problem of the proper care for the dead and what - if any - consequences it has for the life to come. Augustine finds that the reason for respectful care for the dead lies not out of concern for the next life (where it has no effect), but out of concern for those still alive, that care of the dead is an opportunity for a final show of respect for the deceased. In doing so, Augustine gives comfort to those who cannot care for loved ones who have died, without making it seem as though those who can are foolish in doing so.

"In Answer to the Jews" aims to defend the Christian interpretations of messianic prophecy in the Old Testament against Jewish objections. There was a substantial Jewish population in North Africa where Augustine was bishop, and he sought to fortify local Christians with a defense of Christian belief about the Old Testament.

"The Divination of Demons" is a short piece intended to explain a question that seldom troubles Christians today: how could demons prophecy the future and if they could didn't it make them worthy of worship? Without claiming to have every heard a demon prophecy anything, Augustine argues that they could do so by merely natural means, and that this would not even necessarily make them better than men, much less worthy of worship.

A Gem of A Book
I have used this "Treasure of A Book" for the last 20 years, when I first found a copy of it in my town's local library when I was 19 years of age. It has been especially useful while I went and after I graduated from Fashion Design School in Los Angeles. It has been an invaluable reference book, whenever I needed to find an ethic costume. For example, if I want to draw a Korean women in original costume dress. I just look under the country, alphabetically and there it is. I can easily see the traditional dress and sketch it. All the illustrations are excellent and show very good detail. The book does a very good job of representing many different ethic costumes of the world, even ones in countries that no longer exist. Many of the ethic costume designs are still used to this day in the countries that they come from. I have used it to draw illustrations showing different children from around the world. Also, I have used it for other kinds purposes including graphic design illustrations for restaurant menus and restaurant ads. I have returned to this book, over and over, as the best resource for all my needs. Even though, it was published in 1977, I still to this day find it the very best book of its kind.

Fundamentals of Modern Statistical Methods: Substantially Improving Power and Accuracy
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (15 March, 2001)
Author: Rand R. Wilcox
Average review score:

elementary, delightful with a modern touch
This is a marvelous introductory statistics book. In the first five chapters Wilcox presents the classical statistical methods with simplicity and great care. Emphasis is properly placed on the assumptions of the methods and the fact that many times important assumptions are violated in practice. This is all done in the first five chapters. Then in chapters 6 - 12 he provides alternative modern methods that can work better than the classical ones when the assumptions fail.

Chapter 6 is on bootstrap. Chapter 8 covers robust measures of location. Chapter 9 covers statistical inference based on robust measures of location. Chapter 10 deals with nonparametric and robust measures of association. Chapter 11 covers robust estimates of location and Chapter 12 "Alternative Strategies" includes rank test, permutation tests and multiple comparison issues.

At the beginning of Wilcox's book there are three precious quotes that you should appreciate. 1. "If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is not hope for it" Albert Einstein. 2. "Everyone believes in the [normal] law of errors, the experimenters because they think it is a mathematical theorem, the mathematicians because they think it is an experimental fact." Henri Poincare. 3. "Each generation that discovers something from its experience must pass that on, but it must pass that on with a delicate balance of respect and disrespect, so that the race ... does not inflict its errors too rigidly on its youth, but it does pass on the accumulated wisdom plus the wisdom that it may not be wisdom." Richard Feynman.

These quotes were well chosen to fit the theme of the book and represent the wisdom of three great men from the 19th and 20th Centuries.
